WESTFIELD - Joseph Syper, age 93, of Oak St., Westfield, died Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Absolut Care of Westfield.
Joseph was born on March 10, 1919 in VanVoorhis, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Anthony and Felicia (Janeczeska) Syper.
A Chautauqua County resident for the past 82 years, he was schooled in a one room schoolhouse in Hartfield, NY and worked on the family Dairy farm in Portland, NY, prior to working for General Electric Co. of Erie, PA. Joe retired from Welch Foods, Westfield offices, after many many years in 1984 where he served as custodian.
Mr. Syper was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Westfield and the Westfield Exempt Volunteer Firemen's Association. He had been a member of the Fire Department of Westfield, Citizens Hose Co. #2 from 1961-1989 and was a longtime member of the Fire Police. Joe was a avid gardener who was known for his vegetable garden. He greatly enjoyed getting together with his family. He was a family man.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mary (Beers) Syper, whom he married on June 5, 1944, his three daughters: Barbara (Dick) Marshall, Cindy (Dana) Williams and Annette (Rick) Foster all of Westfield, NY and his son, David (Betty) Syper of Mayville, NY. Joe was the proud grandfather of; Angela, Ashley and Austin Syper, Kevin Luce, Dewane Penhollow, Doug Marshall, Vikki Bowen, Dana Williams, Keith Williams, Shawn Foster and Nickey DeGolier. He is further survived by his 23 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his five brothers, John, Peter, Julius, Anthony and Andrew Syper, and by his three sisters, Marie Nau, Stella Syper and Josephine Milks.
Friends may call on Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the MASON Funeral Home, 37 Clinton Street, Westfield, NY, and are invited to attend the funeral service to be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 8, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church of Westfield Fellowship Hall, 101 East Main Street, Westfield, NY with Rev. Matthew Golibersuch officiating. Burial will be private in Westfield Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Westfield, 101 East Main Street, or to the Fire Department of Westfield Memorial Fund, 23 Elm Street, both in Westfield, NY 14787.

Joe was a very cheerful-sweet man. He had such warmth, that made everyone feel welcomed. He had a genuine grandpa personality. With deepest sympathy, Lynnell Ellis, Howard Cooke, and families.
