WESTFIELD - Stephen "Steve" Baran, age 80, of West Main St., Westfield, NY, died Friday, January 4, 2013 at St. Vincent Health Center of Erie, PA, following an extended illness.

Steve was born on January 31, 1932 in Westfield, the son of the late Walter and Anna (Telep) Baran.

In 1982, as team leader for District 709 of Rotary International, Steve lead a group of young men to Israel for 6 weeks. Steve was also very involved in the Westfield Memorial Hospital Capital Fund Raising campaign and was Division Chairman in 1978 and continued his involvement during the annual fund drives. Steve had an interest in the Sea Lion project and served as Division Chairman in 1981. He was selected by USAID to spend a month in the Ukraine during 1992 working with a team of specialists and the Russian farmers during the breakup of the collective farms. The purpose was to show them how to establish individual management plans including establishing vineyards and how to finance the farm operation. in 1994 the USAID sent Steve to Egypt during the summer months to work with a team of specialists and Egyptian farmers to oversee and study the overuse of chemicals in the vineyards and to teach local farmers more about pest management with less chemical use. He and Helen hosted numerous groups of foreign visitors on tours of their vineyards and grape processing plants in our area. Steve remained loyal to his alma mater, Cornell University. He served the Cornell Cooperative Extension as a Board Member and as a member and chair of almost every committee. He was a director of the NYS Wine Grape Growers Assoc., a member of the Cost of Production Committee, the New York-Canada Agricultural Committee and chaired the Cornell Cooperative Extension Committee that was charged with the responsibility to investigate and formulate the networking of the Grape Programs in New York Pennsylvania and Ohio. Steve gave numerous speeches and forums regarding various vineyard practices and was eager to participate with Cornell University in vineyard and equipment experiments. Steve was always willing to help educate young and old alike on grape farming. He donated countless hours and a vineyard to students from Westfield Academy to give them the practical experience that, to Steve, was so invaluable. He will be forever known as an innovator in the Grape Growing industry. in 2012 Steve and Helen were awarded the George Weaver "footprints" award by the Northern Chautauqua Community foundation.

Dear Helen,

Oh how we will miss watching those gorgeous sunsets on the farm with Steve.Steve was so beloved and accomplished because he was a great "listener", humble and kind to everyone that crossed the threshold into his home or walked into his beloved vineyards! Loved the twinkle in his eye and great sense of humor!!!
Loved watching him on the "picker" and knew he was happiest in his beloved "vineyards" and eating one of your fabulous meals with Zeba by his side!

With our deepest sympathy,

Brenda and Fred

Dear Helen and Family:

After reading Steve's obituary and recalling how much he and you have done for grape farmers, the grape industry and Westfield, I think the words of Adlai Stevenson, in his eulogy for a friend seems so appropriate:

"I think it will always be April in our memory of him. It will always be a bright, fresh day, full of the infinite vanity and the promise of new life. Perhaps noting has gone at all. Perhaps only the embodiment of the thing tender, precious to us all - a friendship that is immortal and doesn't pass along. It will always be revived for me as I know for each of you each spring".

You know better than any of the rest of us what a rock Steve was for all of us.
Mary and I send our warmest, deepest thoughts.

I was so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. It always seems that people are gone too quickly from our lives. I hope that you and your family can find comfort from the bibles message at Revelation 21: 3&4 where it says that "God will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry or pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

My deepest condolences to you and your family!

Helen and Family:

I'm so sorry to learn of Steve's passing. Living next door to you brings back so many memories of helping in the cherry orchards and grape vineyards.

I loved how he rewarded our hard work of pulling brush and tying grapes with a bird's eye view on the grape picker.

He was always such a gracious and kind man.

You and your family are in my prayers.
